For any altar space that is devoted to a Deity of Light and goodness, Yerba Santa (Herb of the Saints, Holy Herb) is well placed upon it. A simple, white, offering bowl, filled with this will set the tone for your prayers and making a floor wash with it will bless the home.
New Altar Spaces
A great way to set up any new altar for a saint or a Deity is this formula and this seven herb wash can be used on your floors, as well.
Make a tea of Yerba Santa, Blessed Thistle, Basil, Blessed Salt, Rue, Lavender and Rosemary. A couple of substitutions are Rose, Bay Laurel or Frankincense but the ingredients should total up to seven. Pray Psalms 23 and 51 and 91 over the mixture as you stir it and once cool enough, put a white rag or handkerchief into it. If you can get one blessed by a priest (of any faith), even better but not strictly necessary.
Wring it out so it’s damp but not dripping and wipe down every surface of your new altar. Wipe down the floor underneath it and the wall behind it. Use it to cleanse every item that will sit on the altar but make sure not to touch anything that the water will damage. Let everything air dry and if you can, allow it to sit in the sunshine to dry. Then burn a mixture of Frankincense, Copal and Myrrh over Three Kings Charcoal and smudge the area and smudge (suffumigate) every item before placing it on the altar.
Use Holy Water to baptize and asperge (sprinkle) any and all items that will be housed on the altar and say the appropriate prayers over them.
