V. thaspus, V. densiflorum
Mullein is a peculiar bit of materia magica, used both for summoning Spirits and sending them away. The old grimoires contain some interesting conjure stories regarding its applications.
These tales tell of circles drawn in the dirt and stalks of Mullein made into rudimentary candles and plunged into the perimeter of the circle, to both draw the Spirits close and keep them outside the circle. The entities seem are drawn like moths to the flame and yet they dare not cross that boundary.
Some spells that utilize this plant Spirit are said to help catch adulterers. Some call upon it to make a man ineffective in his sex life. Not cool. Act like grown ups, please.
Other spells say that it helps protect one from feral animals in the wilderness. How might such a seemingly fantastic claim work, if it did, in fact work? A perhaps weak, pseudo-scientific explanation could be that many animals do not care for the scent and steer clear.
However, certainly many animals live among Mullein, growing in the uninhabited European countryside. If you were traveling through the Canadian mountains and had Mullein, I doubt that its scent would stop a Kodiac bear from eating you.
A better explanation is that the Spirit of the plant is called upon via ritual and the Spirit empowers your apotropaic charm. Any potentially dangerous critters would then be shepherded by it and told to wander a different direction. This is the angle that I take in teaching how herbal charms work, in my magick course, The Nascent Magician.

Almost all of the herbs, roots, resins and other, materia magica available here in the online conjure shop are either organic or wild-harvested. This means that they’re great for all your spell work needs, because they are purer, pulled straight from Mother Earth.
Additionally, a great many of these items are pure enough to use in homeopathic medicines and the spices are great for general cooking! Please read the descriptions carefully and do outside research. Always consult your physician before ingesting any herbs, roots, etc.
Take care with herbs, oils, powders and incenses, as some people have allergies that might be aggravated by even 100% organic substances.
Something that is completely harmless and even healthy for one person might be slightly toxic to someone with a more sensitive system.
