Description
Bone Reading, with Magus
-
Divination is the art and science of gaining insight through oracles, to gather information about the past, present or future or the hidden influences in situations and in the intentions of people
Bone Reading is just what it sounds like, using the bones of specific types of animals to divine the future. Frequently, other items such as shells, feathers, keys, dice and almost anything that speaks to the diviner.
As a clarification, the technical term for bone reading is osteomancy. This term, osteomancy means, bones and the telling of things hidden, whether past, present or future.
There is no cruelty toward the animals, in collecting these bones. At least, I personally make it my practice, never to treat an animal in any cruel way. Usually, you harvest the bones after the animal passes naturally.
One exception is that I use a few bones from chickens that I ate. Another exception Is using a bone from an animal hit by a car, to represent accidents.
Another is that I have a piece of the leg bone from the one (and only) deer that I ever shot, when my father taught me to hunt deer at age 17. That particular bone carries the meaning (in my bone set) of the metaphor of the hunt, providing for one’s family or seeking something elusive.
During a bone reading, I lay out a prayer and say a prayer and I ask the question. We draw the bones from the bag and cast them onto the cloth. I note their positions and formulate an interpretation.
Bone readings are quite revealing and useful, especially since we call upon the ancestors for assistance in these sessions. They chime in with their insight on your affairs and empower the bones to “speak” to us.
It’s a very different sort of reading, similar perhaps to the runes but quite different from the tarot.
